The International Day of Radiology is an annual event held with the aim of building greater awareness of the value that radiology contributes to safe patient care, and improving understanding of the vital role radiologists and radiological technologists play in the healthcare.
Medical imaging is one of the most exciting and progressive disciplines in healthcare with considerable ongoing technological and biological research.
November 8, the day that Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the existence of x-rays in 1895, has been chosen as a day of action and awareness.
Sports imaging has been chosen as the main theme of the day in 2019, to highlight the essential role that imaging professionals play in the detection, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of sports-related injuries, increasing the quality of management of patients.

Sports Imaging (Musculoskeletal Radiology)
Musculoskeletal radiology is a fast-growing subspecialty of diagnostic radiology that plays an increasingly important part in the assessment and management of patients with a wide variety of injuries. Within this subspecialty, a new discipline has emerged – Sports imaging.
Whatever sport you take part in and whatever level you compete at, we are highlighting the key role of imaging in the diagnosis, prognosis and the treatment of sports injuries.
At Lake, Smit and Partners, we are proud of our highly qualified musculoskeletal (MSK) radiology team and with us having the greatest number of radiologists in South Africa that have obtained the European Diploma in Musculoskeletal Radiology (EDiMSK), our team is the envy of radiology practices around the country.
This expertise coupled with the advances in technology, allows for the potential to detect far more subtle injuries to ligaments, tendons, cartilage and bone often early enough to guide and plan correct management of the injury to prevent further damage.
Their expertise ensures correct imaging, interpretation and interventions to ensure you can get back to your sport and training as safely and quickly as possible.
Lake, Smit & Partners is proud to take part in the joint initiative of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR), with the full cooperation and involvement of the International Society of Radiology (ISR), and the Radiological Society of South Africa (RSSA).
Whether you win or lose on the scoreboard, South African sportsmen and sportswomen are always guaranteed first place treatment at Lake, Smit and Partners.
