In 2009, Lake, Smit & Partners took the strategic decision to formally institute sub-specialisation in our Practice in order to enhance the service to our patients and clinicians by adding value to the radiology report. We identified 3 subspecialty groups, Body, Musculoskeletal and Neuroradiology, to best serve the needs of our medical community. This diagnostic expertise is complemented by our highly accomplished interventional team.

10 years on we are bearing the fruits of this initiative with a very strong Neuroradiology team, from both a diagnostic and neurointervention perspective.

Our team is headed by Dr. Duncan Royston who obtained his Masters in Neurointervention at Oxford University in the UK. He is a recognised national expert in the interventional treatment of cerebral aneurysms and vascular malformations. He is an integral member of the stroke intervention team.

Dr. Thami Mngoma has obtained the European Diploma in Neuroradiology (EDiNR), European Diploma in Paediatric Neuroradiology (EDiPNR) and European Diploma in Head and Neck Radiology (EBiHNR). He is a former vice-president of the Radiological Society of South Africa.

Dr. Stuart Kidgell is an experienced neuroradiologist having achieved his “10 000” hours without a formal neuro qualification. He is the recognised cardiac imaging expert in Durban for adult and paediatric cardiac radiology. He has established a close relationship with St. Bartholomew’s Heart Hospital in London, the largest cardiac MRI centre in Europe.

Dr. Shalen Misser has obtained the European Diploma in Neuroradiology (EDiNR), European Diploma in Paediatric Neuroradiology (EDiPNR), European Diploma in Head and Neck Radiology (EBiHNR) and has completed his Masters Degree at UKZN. He is a highly respected medico-legal opinion in South Africa in paediatric birth injury and is currently studying for his PhD in this field.

Dr. Barry Bloom is an experienced neuroradiologist having achieved his “10 000” hours without a formal neuro qualification.

Dr. Wanda Mbatha has obtained the European Diploma in Neuroradiology (EDiNR), European Diploma in Paediatric Neuroradiology (EDiPNR) and European Diploma in Head and Neck Radiology (EBiHNR). He completed a 1 year Neuroradiology fellowship at the prestigious Queen’s Square Centre, London.

Dr. Werner van Straaten is a dual qualified interventionist having completed both general and neurointervention fellowships. He has obtained the European Diploma in Neuroradiology (EDiNR), European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma in General Intervention (UOFS). He is an integral member and the driving force of the stroke intervention team.

Dr. Zain Ally has obtained the European Diploma in Neuroradiology (EDiNR) and recently completed an Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship at the University of British Columbia (Canada). He is also a member of our general intervention team.
