In 2009, Lake, Smit & Partners took the strategic decision to formally institute subspecialisation in our Practice in order to enhance the service to our patients and clinicians by adding value to the radiology report. We identified 3 subspecialty groups, Body, Musculoskeletal and Neuroradiology, to best serve the needs of our medical community. This diagnostic expertise is complemented by our highly accomplished interventional team.

10 years on we are bearing the fruits of this initiative with a very strong Musculoskeletal team that is the envy of the country’s radiology practices.

Over the last few years, we have added to our experienced MSK team of 4 radiologists and currently have a team of 9 MSK radiologists.

Our team is headed by Dr. Peter Mercouris who was the first South African to obtain the European Diploma in Musculoskeletal Radiology (EDiMSK) through the ESSR (European Society of Skeletal Radiology), achieved with a magna cum laude award in 2011. He is considered one of the doyens of MSK imaging in South Africa and has lectured both nationally and internationally.

Dr. John Zietkiewicz was a GP for many years before specialising in radiology and whilst still a registrar embraced MSK imaging which was still in its infancy at that time. He was the second South African to obtain the European Diploma in Musculoskeletal Radiology (EDiMSK).

Dr. Mike Eddles is a highly experienced musculoskeletal radiologist having achieved his “10 000 hours” without a formal MSK qualification.

Dr. Gavin Pillay is also a highly experienced MSK radiologist and has obtained the European Diploma in Musculoskeletal Radiology (EDiMSK).

Dr. Iqbal Ganie is Lake, Smit & Partners first fellowship trained MSK radiologist having completed a MSK fellowship at the University of British Columbia (Canada) in 2017.

Dr. Bishum Rattan obtained the European Diploma in Musculoskeletal Radiology (EDiMSK) in 2018 and completed his fellowship training at the University of British Columbia (Canada) in 2020.

Dr. Vishnu Ramoorthy obtained the European Diploma in Musculoskeletal Radiology (EDiMSK) in 2019 and completed his fellowship training at the University of British Columbia (Canada) in 2020.

Dr. Andrew Rose obtained his European Diploma in Musculoskeletal Radiology (EDiMSK) in 2022. At the ESSR meeting in 2019 in Lisbon, Portugal, his article on “ACL repair and reconstruction” was recognised as one of the 3 best electronic poster presentations which represents an outstanding achievement.
