ðĢðķð°ðððŋðē ð: The attached image is of a 56 year old lady with inoperable liver cancer that was not responding to chemotherapy. This is the original CT from 2018 showing multiple Liver tumours (white areas) throughout the liver.
ðĢðķð°ðððŋðē ðŪ: The attached image is of the Radioembolization which was performed by the Intervention team at Lake, Smit & Partners in October 2018.
Small radioactive seeds called sirspheres were injected directly into the artery that supplies the liver tumours. The seeds lodge directly inside each tumour and emit internal radiation that shrinks the lesion over time.
The picture shows the embolization procedure- the dark smudges represent the seeds within each tumour, with sparing of the healthy liver
ðĢðķð°ðððŋðē ðŊ: The picture shows the follow up nuclear medicine scan performed the day after the procedure. The yellow and blue areas represent the radiation activity within each tumour.
ðĢðķð°ðððŋðē ð°: Follow up scans have shown a dramatic response with shrinkage and/or disappearance of every liver tumour.
This picture is from a recent scan in July this year showing that most of the tumours have disappeared when compared to the original imaging
